The archbishops and bishops prepare to lead the recession

Seattle Archbishop Peter Sartain, center, Bishop Eusebio Elizondo, left, and Alexander J Brunett prepare for the recessional during Simbang Gabi Commissioning Mass at St. James Cathedral in Seattle Saturday Dec. 10, 2011.

I photographed the Simbang Gabi Commissioning Mass at St. James Cathedral. Simbang Gabi is a series of masses leading up to Christmas Eve celebrated by Roman Catholic Filipinos. Parols suspended from the ceiling of St. James Cathedral. Participants also bring parols as part the commissioning mass. Another colorful event. I also captured a nice imag, below, behind the scenes in the sacrisity as the Archbishop and other prepared for Mass. More pictures can be found after the break.

Traditional Dancers waiting to perform

Traditional dancers wait to perform durinng a reception following the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass at St. James Cathedral in Seattle Saturday Dec. 3, 2011. (PHOTO by Stephen Brashear)

I have the privilege of photographing the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which included a Rosary at St. Mary’s Church, a procession to St. James Cathedral and a reception. Our Lady of Gaudalupe is the Virgin Mary, who is Patroness of Americas, Empress of Latin America and Protectress of the Unborn Children. My two favorite pictures, above and below, happened behind the scenes while dancers were waiting to perform. The colorful costumes from different cultures throughout the Americas made for a target-rich environment. Not to mention the backdrop of St. James Cathedral. More pictures after the break.

Sawtooth Music Festival in Stanley, Friday July 29, 2011.

I had the opportunity to photograph the Sawtooth Music Festival in Stanley, Idaho (http://sawtoothmusicfestival.com/music/). I don’t think I’ve had more fun shooting a concert. No three song limit. All great musicians and friendly people too, Set against the backdrop of the Sawtooth Mountains. It was great to have the access that I did. However, that access was was cut short by a massive thunderstorm that shut the concert down on the final evening. Undeterred, headliners Langhorne Slim performed at a local bar. Here are the pictures.

Bishop Joseph Tyson, left, jokes with Our Lady of the Mountain pastor Col. Gary Studniewski before presiding over a Celebration of Confirmation at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Church in Parkland, Wash., Thursday May 6, 2011.

As I have mentioned before, I’m a big fan of behind-the-scenes pictures. This wasn’t really behind the scenes, but it was before a confirmation mass. To me pictures such as this tell me more about the people and allow other to see scenes they would otherwise not be privy. However, there are times when the pictures can capture someone’s personality during an event that tends to be ritual. Save for portion when the Bishop questions the candidates there is not much room for improvisation. There are two pictures after the break of Bishop Tyson questioning the candidates, which, to me, reveal his sense of humor.

Had the chance to photograph Rachel Teigen-Brackett, an amazing music teacher at Lakeview Elementary School in Kirkland. To call her a music teacher is almost inaccurate. She uses music to incorporate other subject, such as foreign language in to her lessons. She keeps the kids focused and on task. It was amazing to see her and the kids. Oh yeah, and she has recovered from a brain tumor, which had to be removed last year. Here is the story and here is a picture from the time I spend with her.
