Seattle Sounders FC fans hold up signs during the eleventh minute to show their support of Steve Zakuani, who broke his leg in a previous game during play between the Seattle Sounders FC and Toronto at Qwest Field in Seattle Saturday April 30, 2011. The Sounders won the game 3-0.
If ever that cliche applied it was Saturday night at Qwest Field. The Sounders, who lost forwards Steve Zakuani and O’Brian White to injuries, beat the Toronto FC 3-0. Zakuani’s leg was broken in a previous road game during a vicious tackle. During the eleventh minute the crowd held up signs to show support for Zakuani. I try to capture the emotion of every game I cover. Some games, I do so better than others. Sometimes, I’m in the wrong spot. Sometimes the emotion is not as visible as I would like it to be. Brad Evans, scoring two goals, got pretty emotion and it made for some nice pictures. More pictures after the break.

Fans put their scarves up before play between the Seattle Sounders FC and the Chicago Fire at Qwest Field in Seattle Tuesday April 8, 2011. The Sounders won the game 2-1.
The Sounders got their first home win of the season against the Chicago Fire. They also scored their first home goal of season, after several games of, oh so, narrow misses. Here are some pics. I like shooting day games early in the year. The field is evenly lit. No going from shadow to extreme brightness in the middle of a play. Her are a few more pictures from the game.

Seattle Sounders fans burn road flares during the march to the match before play between the Seattle Sounders FC and the L.A. Galaxy at Qwest Field in Seattle Tuesday March 15, 2011. The Galaxy won the game 1-0.
Well, not really, but out of context the Seattle Sounders FC march to match could easily be mistaken for a riot or demonstration, with hundreds of fans some masked fans carrying road flares and chanting. The rain was just starting as the march finished up. Some water on my lens made for interesting lens flare. It was a challenge to make the pictures while avoiding inhaling road flare smoke and molten ‘whatever’ dripping from the flares.
The rain picked up right before the game. It only rained because I left my camera rain jackets at home. I have since put those jackets back into my photo roller which will guarantee that it won’t rain at another Sounders FC game all season.
Unfortunately, the Sounders lost the season opening game to the L.A. Galaxy 1-0. A few pictures after the break.

Vendor Darrin Gifford hawks t-shirts out side of Qwest Field before the NFC Wild Card playoff game in Seattle, Washington, USA, 8 January 2011. The Seattle Seahawks, who are playing the New Orleans Saints, are the NFL first team to make the playoffs with a losing record.
I photographed an historic game Sunday. It was the first time and NFL team with a losing record hosted a playoff game. Regardless of the outcome of the game I would be remiss for not making a photo not reflecting that fact. Alas, the Seahawks were supposed to have been blown out by the New Orleans Saints. Not only did the Seahawks keep it close, they beat the Saints and in doing so, the fans set off a small seismic event as reported by the Seattle Times here, following the longest and most amazing 67-yard touchdown runs in Seahawks history by Marshawn Lynch, part of which is pictured below including a backwards flop into the endzone. I was in a pretty good spot to photograph the run. I was across the field at about the fifteen or twenty-yard line. At first it just seemed like a really long six-yard run. Long in that it was taking Lynch forever to get six yards, but then he popped out into open field and made a few people miss. Toward the end of the run the buffer on my camera filled up. More photographs from the game after the break.

The Sounder played the L.A. Galaxy in the first round of the Major League Soccer playoffs. Unfortunately, they left for L.A. behind 1-0 in the two-game series. Here is a quick pic from them. While the concept of a two-game series might be great for fans and attendance. It sure is anti-climatic to photograph.

The Seattle Sounders FC came back from a one goal deficit to defeat the only team in Major League Soccer that they have not previously beaten … Chivas U.S.A. Here is a photograph of jubilation by the Sounders with what I am leading myself to believe as dejection by a Chivas player in the background. When shooting reaction shots, I’m always trying to get both in the same frame to better tell the story. Not the best, but it comes a little close. I would have like to have seen more faces of the Sounder players, but they all ignored my pleas to celebrate more.

The Seattle Sounders FC won their second consecutive U.S. Open Cup Tuesday against the Columbus Crew at Qwest Field. I came away with a somewhat unique action shot from behind the goal. It would have been better if the the post to the left wasn’t there, but I will take it as they are hard to come by. It almost has all the elements convergering: Steve Zakuani’s face is framed through an opening in the net, he is taking a shot on a diving Columbus Crew goalie.
